Duke Energy Sponsors Educational Day For North Carolina High School Students

North Carolina A&T State University, through its hosting of a Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) two-week camp for teens, has gained Duke Energy's sponsorship for another outreach effort. The company now sponsors "Duke Energy Day" at NCA&T to expose K-12 and college students to the fields of energy and power electronics. CPES is an Engineering Research Center that is based at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Duke Energy got involved with CPES by seeing first-hand the impact of the center's summer camp on area high school students. The company was impressed with presentations made by camp participants and NCA&T students and faculty. The camp gives a small group of high school students a crash course in energy and power electronics. Additionally, CPES faculty and students visit nearby high schools during the year to increase students' awareness of power electronics and energy and to drum up interest in the camp and Duke Energy Day.

Organizers of Duke Energy Day make presentations to students about various energy and power electronics topics. Participants tour ERC facilities on NC&AT's campus and the university's circuits labs. The day serves to introduce participants to Duke Energy and CPES.

The quality of CPES camp presentations improves every year and the Duke Energy Day's involvement in outreach efforts will no doubt contribute to the center's increasing impact among area high-schoolers.
