Young Scholars Program

The precollege Young Scholars Program is giving future scientists and engineers an opportunity to gain hands-on experiences while still in high school. Directed by Claire Duggan, who is K-12 Coordinator for the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS), an Engineering Research Center (ERC) headquartered at Northeastern University (NU), the program is open to Boston-area applicants who have completed either their sophomore or junior year in high school. Three CenSSIS researchers worked with seven Young Scholars in the summer of 2005.

As an example of the influence this program can have on talented young people, NU student Andrea Narino began her CenSSIS experience as a participant in the 2004 Young Scholars Program, working with Prof. Charles DiMarzio. The following year, Andrea enrolled as a freshman civil engineering student at NU and was invited to become a CenSSIS Scholar. Andrea is currently participating in a CenSSIS/NE-LSAMP Research Opportunity by working with Prof. Sara Wadia Fascetti on a research project entitled, "Civil Infrastructure Diagnosis." Andrea also attended the NSF/ERC Annual Meeting as a Student Leadership Council representative and participated in a panel discussion led by CenSSIS Director Michael Silevitch on the topic of Strategies for Increasing Engineering Enrollments. In January 2006, Andrea attended the National Meeting for the Society of Hispanic Engineers, distributing information on the CenSSIS REU Program while she was there. To "close the loop" on her Young Scholar experiences so far, Andrea is now regularly visiting her old high school to mentor capable young students to choose the engineering pathway.
