Engineering Research Center for Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (ERC/RMS)

New Programs at UM

Faculty at the University of Michigan's ERC for Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (ERC/RMS) have developed a new undergraduate Manufacturing Systems Concentration, with its supporting courses, in the College of Engineering. In 2005 about 20 students participated in the program. One of the concentration core courses is a new, unique course: Design of Manufacturing Systems. In this course the students learn the basic design concepts of large manufacturing systems and how to operate them in ways that enhance their productivity.

Our two new graduate courses have begun to achieve national attention. The course Reconfiguration Science-Base was taught in Winter 2002 and Winter 2005 to 60 students, over half of them at remote industry sites in the US and Mexico. The course Reconfigurable Manufacturing was taught in 2001 and 2003 simultaneously at UM and Wayne State University, and in the Winter of 2004 to 54 students (14 of those at remote sites).
