Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER)Earthquake Engineering Researchers Disseminate New Seismic Assessment ModelsResearchers at the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, headquartered at the University of California at Berkeley, have synthesized results of a multiyear research program to propose new engineering models for seismic assessment of older hazardous concrete buildings. The findings and new engineering models were presented to practicing engineering professionals in daylong seminars in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. The principal findings were forwarded to an American Society of Civil Engineers committee in time to incorporate needed changes in the upcoming Standard for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings, an important document in the field. The Standard for Seismic Rehabilitation of Buildings provides important guidelines to organizations and government agencies and officials responsible for programs that reduce earthquake risks to buildings. The standard is also an important reference for building owners that seek to retrofit or improve building safety. The improved engineering models will promote more effective earthquake risk mitigation programs by helping professionals pinpoint when retrofits are necessary and how to execute them in the best way.
