Mid-America Earthquake CenterStudent Activities Prepare Future Earthquake Scientists For WorkThe Mid-America Earthquake Center is preparing the next generation of earthquake scientists and engineers through a number of activities that promote student involvement in earthquake research. Students are eligible to apply for a center-wide Certificate in Earthquake Science and Engineering by taking courses at their home institution in earthquake-related topics and participating in a Center-wide institute focusing on the center research thrust areas. This Consequence-Based Engineering Institute, first held in January 2003 at Texas A&M University over a six-day period, gave students from center institutions the opportunity to learn from diverse, interdisciplinary faculty regarding topics ranging from seismology to social science. The Institute provided a theoretical and practical framework for the participants to become more aware of the consequences of a damaging earthquake and to identify their roles as students in mitigation research. MAE students also have opportunities to travel to post-earthquake sites across the globe with students from other earthquake centers, to become involved as undergraduates through a unique tri-center summer Research Experience for Undergraduates program, and to interface with industry mentors through a practitioner-student interaction program. Inter-institutional and interdisciplinary interaction of students with the Center's Student Leadership Council enhances student exposure beyond that normally seen without the benefit of a center experience.
