Mid-America Earthquake CenterEarthquake Research Center Holds Weeklong Program For StudentsThe Mid-America Earthquake (MAE) Center, an ERC headquartered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is preparing its students to be the next generation of earthquake scientists and engineers through a number of activities that promote student involvement in earthquake research. Students are eligible for a certificate in Earthquake Science and Engineering by taking courses at their home institution in earthquake-related topics and participating in the center's Consequence-Based Engineering Institute, which focuses on the MAE Center's research thrust areas. The institute provides a theoretical and practical framework for the participants to become more aware of the consequences of a damaging earthquake and to identify their roles as students in mitigation research. MAE held the seven-day institute in January 2003 and again in January 2005 at Texas A&M University to give students at the center's nine member institutions the opportunity to learn from faculty about a range of topics from seismology to social science.
