VaNTH ERC for Bioengineering Educational TechnologiesOnline Portal Provides Tools for Bioengineering EducationTeaching bioengineering is not easy; it requires imagination and dynamic course materials to engage students fully. The VaNTH center for Bioengineering Educational Technologies, headquartered at Vanderbilt University, is using the Internet to help educators advance their skills. The center has developed a web resource for bioengineering education that catalogs and archives many papers, concepts, presentations, and illustrations of the center's approach to bioengineering education. This online resource is connected to a web portal called CLII The Community Learning and Innovation Initiative which in turn connects professionals from many disciplines that are focused on related topics. CLII facilitates innovations and collaborative efforts between educational researchers and practitioners such as faculty members, education technologists, and learning designers. The portal explores and communicates how shared pathways of collaboration, process, and methodologies can help bridge academic technology and learning theory to produce new capabilities and services in higher education. The website is a central repository for VaNTH's courseware. The CLII
offers a number of simulations and games that faculty can use to teach
bioengineering subjects through such topics as bioreactors, ultrasound
imaging, diffusion in microdevices and cells, a free body diagram tool,
and cell-systems. CLII provides educators with an important tool for creating
new course materials and locating those developed by others for introduction
into the classroom.
