University of Washington Engineered Biomaterials ERC (UWEB)Camp Introduces Students to Bioengineering FieldThe University of Washington Engineered Biomaterials (UWEB) Engineering Research Center hosted its first Annual Bioengineering Summer Camp for 8th and 9th grade students in 2006 to raise awareness about potential careers in the sciences. UWEB faculty Horst von Recum, Shirley Chou, and Suzie Pun worked with a team of bioengineering faculty, postdocs, and high school teachers to design the camp curriculum. UWEB held the camp for 28 young students. Many attendees were from groups under-represented in engineering, such as the African American, Hispanic, and Southeast Asian communities. Eleven (40%) of the participants were girls. The ERC team collaborated closely with Mare Sullivan, a junior high school
science teacher, on a module about cardiac disease. The session consisted
of short lectures, brainstorming sessions, and stations where students
could handle stents, rotablators, and artificial heart valves. The camp
exposed students to new technologies and developments in the bioengineering
field.
