Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues (GTEC)

Creating Opportunities for Student Interaction with Industry

The Georgia Tech/Emory University Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues (GTEC), an Engineering Research Center, held its first annual Biotechnology Career Development and Recruitment Workshop on February 3, 2006. The event was jointly sponsored by the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB) and was organized by the BME and IBB (formerly the GTEC SLC) student organizations. The purpose of the workshop was two-fold: first, it allowed industry to learn more about the curriculum that students undergo in the bioengineering and science disciplines while giving industry the opportunity to provide feedback on industry needs in their technical workforce; second, it provided graduate students and senior-level undergraduates the opportunity to learn more about internship and job opportunities in industry.

Industry representatives, faculty, and students discussed the current curriculum and its role in preparing students to enter industry in an informal lunch setting. The workshop then held a traditional career fair while panel discussions ran concurrently. Many of the companies brought several representatives and held information sessions and interviewed students while at the workshop. Participating companies included several GTEC Industry Partners: Organ Recovery Systems, DePuy, Cook Biotech, and Smith and Nephew.
