Center for the Engineering of Living Tissues (GTEC)

New Marketing Strategy Being Developed for GTEC Innovations

The GTEC intellectual property portfolio is being "mined" for groups of innovations and technologies to address specific biological systems or disease states. These inventions are combined on a marketing CD as a "suite" of available technologies being developed in GTEC faculty laboratories.

The first marketing CD focuses on cellular therapies and supporting technologies for the treatment of diabetes; it is entitled "Science to Innovation: GTEC Therapies for Diabetes 2004." Research and patented innovations from five GTEC faculty members, Athanassios Sambanis, Peter Thulé, Christian Larsen, Collin Weber, and Eliot Chaikof, are featured. The CD includes information on diabetes as a major healthcare problem with its associated morbidities, market size, and demographics; FDA regulation of cell-based and genetically engineered products; copies of invention abstracts, published patent applications, and issued patents; PDF versions of publications related to the innovations; and other related information. There is also a general overview of GTEC for those who may not be familiar with the center.

The primary objectives of the marketing CDs are to provide detailed information on opportunities available within GTEC, such as
• Innovations available for licensing,
• Opportunities for co-development projects,
• Expertise of GTEC faculty
• Opportunities for sponsored research with faculty labs, and
• Excellent talent of GTEC students and graduates available for    internships and employment.

Information gathered from technology postings on TechEx (www.techex.com) will strengthen the targeting marketing potential for GTEC, and help us to compile a contact database for future marketing efforts. Further refinement and additions to the CD are planned, including making this information available on the GTEC website. Work is currently underway on the next CD to focus on cardiovascular innovations in the areas of heart valves, biomaterials for cardiovascular applications, tissue-engineered blood vessel substitutes and heart valves, bioreactor systems, and core capabilities within these areas of expertise that industry can tap into. The CD received positive reviews from industry members who were given the CD at the GTEC Educational Partners Symposium in October 2004.
