| Sara Wadia-Fascetti, a researcher
with the NSF-funded Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing & Imaging
Systems (Gordon-CenSSIS) Engineering Research Center (ERC), received a
$3.7 million award from NSF to increase participation of women in science
and engineering academic careers.
The award, which is part
of NSF’s ADVANCE program, aims to develop innovative ways to increase the
representation and advancement of women in academic science and engineering
careers at Northeastern University, by promoting positive changes in the
work environment that will advance all faculty. The program’s focus
includes engineering, science, mathematics, and social science disciplines
as well as interdisciplinary research centers that are characterized by
culturally diverse workplace cultures.
Dr. Wadia-Fascetti and her
team, working within the Office of the Provost, will engage institutional
leadership to build effective collaborative networks for faculty, in particular
women, departments, and interdisciplinary programs that incorporate global
opportunities. While driven by the need to increase participation
and advancement of women faculty, these efforts will benefit all faculty
members and should serve as tools for initiatives at other academic institutions.
Northeastern University,
an NSF-funded ADVANCE Institutional Transformation site, hosted an ADVANCE
workshop in October 2009 that included participation the Gordon-CenSSIS
and the ALERT Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence.
