ERC IREE: Collaboration with the Technical University of Munich |
 |
| Seven graduate students
from the NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) for Computer-Integrated
Surgical Systems and Technology (CISST), headquartered at Johns Hopkins
University, had the opportunity, through NSF’s International Research,
Education, and Engineering (IREE) program, to spend a summer abroad collaborating
with four laboratories at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
These included the Computer Aided Medical Procedures and Augmented Reality
Laboratory (CAMP), the Minimally-Invasive Interdisciplinary Therapy and
Intervention Lab (MITI), Micro Technology and Medical Device Technology
(MIMED), and Institute of Automatic Control Engineering. The visit,
which was organized by Professors Hager (CISST ERC) and Burschka (TUM),
was expected to initiate the first steps toward a more formal joint exchange
program with TUM. The collaborations undertaken included both scientific
and cultural elements.
One of the collaborative
scientific projects involved Surgical Skill Evaluation. A four-camera
live surgery recording system was designed to collect synchronized video
data from laparoscopic gall bladder removal (cholecystectomy) surgery.
The first two cameras focused on the patient’s chest and abdominal area.
Sterile color markers were attached to laparoscopic tools to assist in
tool tracking, identification, and orientation extraction. The third
camera was the used in the laparoscopic surgery, providing information
about the motions of the tools and tissues inside the abdominal cavity.
The fourth camera had a complete view of the operating room. By the
conclusion of this collaboration, the team successfully recorded a test
surgery and two live cholecystectomies. Arrangements were made with
the CAMP lab at TUM to continue recording data for further collaboration. |
