Teaching Resource Provides Outlet for Synthetic Biology Curriculum |
 |
| BioBuilder (www.biobuilder.org)
is an online teaching resource that features short animations exploring
and explaining the fundamentals of synthetic biology. BioBuilder
was designed to be accessible to a wide audience, including high school
teachers and students. MIT’s Dr. Natalie Kuldell, the creator and
director of BioBuilder, joined the education team at the multi-institutional
Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center (SynBERC) (headquartered
at UC Berkeley) in September 2007, bringing to the Center expertise in
curriculum development and learning outcomes as well as a primary research
interest in genetics and molecular biology.
Drawing on her research background,
Dr. Kuldell has integrated cutting-edge scientific approaches into the
MIT undergraduate engineering subjects she teaches, including new and programmatic
curricula to teach synthetic biology. These classroom materials are now
core requirements in MIT’s new Biological Engineering major. SynBERC
will help Dr. Kuldell develop a multimedia synthetic biology curriculum
for BioBuilder, and BioBuilder will give the Center an important edge in
disseminating synthetic biology education to a digitally inclined audience. |
