| Established as an NSF Engineering
Research Center (ERC), the Georgia Tech/Emory Center (GTEC) for the Engineering
of Living Tissues enables the development of tissue engineering technologies
through an integrated systems approach, harnessing discoveries from the
biological revolution to significantly improve clinical therapies.
In late 2007, under the leadership of GTEC, the Georgia Stem Cell Initiative
(GSCI) was formed. Growing quickly, the organization now boasts more
than 80 statewide members including a focused group of faculty and trainees
from Georgia Tech, Emory University, the Morehouse School of Medicine,
the University of Georgia, the Medical College of Georgia, and other institutions.
Millipore, a leading corporation in stem cell research, sponsors GSCI quarterly
meetings, which occur at universities throughout the state on a rotating
basis.
The mission of GSCI is to
(1) establish a collaborative state-wide infrastructure for stem cell research
and (2) educate the people of the State of Georgia about the scientific
objectives and future impacts of stem cell research on society. This
initiative builds on many of the collaborations and relationships fostered
by GTEC. All meetings are open to interested faculty, post-docs,
research scientists, and graduate students who are conducting stem cell
research or would like to incorporate the use of stem cells into their
research. |
